Dior Vernis in 'Shadow' (n° 783) From The 'Les Violets Hypnotiques' Collection

As part of my recent nail polish craze (haul post HERE if you're interested), I purchased the Dior nail polish in 'Shadow' (n° 783) from one of their latest collections 'Les Violets Hypnotiques'.  It's the more interesting one out of the collection.

Story behind the collection:
Christian Dior defined purple as a demanding and sophisticated shade, calling it the veritable "Queen of colours".
From the emblematic lilac worn by Mitzah Bricard, the designer's muse, to the deep violet of the legendary Poison perfume bottle, a myriad of purple shades exists in the world of Dior.
Today, this favoured colour has become an essential weapon of seduction in the shape of the three new 'Violets Hypnotiques' nail varnishes. This exclusive collection of three elegant and seductive purples.

Colour and Finish
'Shadow' is described as 'an intense and iridescent purple'.  It's a very deep shade and everything about it, even the little specs of plum iridescence running through it reminds me of the deep, purple variety of aubergine in that it's not a completely flat shade of purple.  The finish is also similar. LOL.  To me, it lacks a little gloss and shine on its own, which I would have preferred to give it that extra oomph.  It's a little subdued or muted and looks a little dirty even and almost matte(!), which I guess makes it a little interesting at the same time (if that makes any sense at all!). /:-\  However, a little top coat does the job of bringing it more to life (I use my trusty Becca 2-in-1 Base/Top Coat).  Woohoo! :D  Without it the ruby plum iridescence is very subtle that you can't really tell it's there most of the time unless you look very closely under certain lighting and at an angle.

Application
Super easy to apply in two coats for full opacity.  The wide, flat brush helps to apply in just a jiffy!

Longevity
This nail polish on its own (no top coat) lasted me about 5 days with no chipping and only the subtlest tip wear that's barely noticeable.  So, the wear time is very good indeed. :)

Anyhoo, here are some snap shots and swatches of this lovely violet...
Packaging
Similar to Chanel nail varnishes, the Dior nail varnish is packaged in a square-shaped (with curved corners) glass bottle. The top silver cap with the 'CD' logo engraved at the top is purely for aesthetic purposes only.  Pull this off to reveal the actual round nail varnish bottle cap (ribbed for better grip to open and close securely) that also serves as the brush applicator handle.
It comes with a wide brush applicator with a curved end for quick and easy application in fewer strokes. The shape is somewhat similar to Sally Hansen's brush.
You can see the brush applicator is fairly thin and flat.

Final Verdict
On it's own, I like it but I don't love it.  Apply a top coat, and bam!  The gorgeous ruby plum iridescence shines through and I LOVE it! ^_^  Still, for the high price point typical of a high-end brand, I wish I didn't have to take that extra step to apply a top coat to appreciate 'Shadow' in all its glory.  I'm one of those people that don't have the time and patience to apply a top coat every single time unfortunately! ;-)  However, this is definitely worth checking out if you don't mind the price and the top coat requirement (unless you like it without it of course - it's all up to you!)

Hope this was helpful!
